Your SCORE evaluation is based in part on your speed, which is measured by the Sanford SCORE Flying 10 Yard Sprint. You'll need two people to keep time, two stop watches, six cones and a measuring tape (about 60 ft).

Note: you can perform the 10 Yard Sprint at the same time you do the Flying 10 Yard Sprint. When performing them at the same time, use the fastest 10-yard time for that part of the SCORE.


  1. SetUp

    Place two cones approximately four feet apart to form a starting line. Place a second and third set of cones 10 and 20 yards away from the starting line to form a running lane. One timer stands at the 10-yard mark, and the second timer stands at the 20-yard mark.

  2. Test & Measure

    The athlete starts in an upright position with his or her toes behind the starting line. The athlete sprints past the 20-yard line at full speed. The athlete will have three attempts to clock his or her fastest time.

    Both timers should start their stopwatches at the athlete's first movement. The timer at 10-yards should stop the watch when the athlete passes the 10-yard mark. The second timer stops the watch when the athlete passes 20 yards.

  3. Calculate & Record

    Record the 10- and 20-yard times for each attempt, rounding to the nearest hundredth of a second (example: 1.71 sec & 2.95 sec). Calculate the time it takes to sprint from the 10-yard mark to the 20-yard mark. To do this, subtract the 10-yard time from the 20-yard time. This is the "split time." Do this for each of the three attempts. The fastest split time, rounded to the nearest hundredth of a second, will be used for the athlete's SCORE.
