Meet the innovative sports science experts behind SCORE.

Michael Bergeron, Ph.D. FACSM

Dr. Michael Bergeron is the Executive Director of the National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance at Sanford Health and the National Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute, as well as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota at the Sanford USD Medical Center. Internationally known as an innovative sports science expert for his research in exercise, heat stress and athletic health and leadership in the sports medicine community, Dr. Bergeron is a Fellow and past Trustee of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and is currently a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. Dr. Bergeron serves as an Editorial Board member for the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism and Journal of Athletic Training.

Thayne Munce, Ph.D.

Thayne Munce is leading the development of Sanford SCORE. He is the Associate Director of the National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance, as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. Dr. Munce is an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). His primary research and expertise are in the areas of applied exercise physiology, athletic readiness and human thermoregulation. He specializes in translating the most current, evidence-based knowledge into practical applications on the playing field and in the clinic through research, education and delivery of sports medicine services

Christopher Powers, PhD, PT, FAPTA

Dr. Christopher Powers is an Associate Professor in the Division of Biokinesiology & Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California. Dr. Powers studies the biomechanical aspects of human movement and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (Orthopedic and Research sections), American Society for Biomechanics, American Society for Testing and Measures, and the North American Society for Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis. He is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, serving as President of the Section on Research.
